There is a quickening….an awakening occurring all over the world. Have you felt it? Our organizations, families, and we ourselves as facilitators, are all changing. Old structures and patterns long held as ‘the norm’ or ‘the standard’ no longer serve us. Many are being called to a higher purpose. We are in fast changing times and, as facilitators, we are being called upon more and more to lead the change.

My life is undoing considerable loss this year. My godson suicided, my Mum passed sweetly, my grandson moved, my publishing company is closing, and my corporate facilitation practice and U Vic are done.
What does sweet gooey caramel have to do with knowing?

This post is an excerpt from my emerging book on Vibrational Facilitation: an emerging conversation. Everything is emerging …that’s the point! The thoughts are forming, the grammar’s not the best, but this quickly emerging field of vibrational facilitation is…well emerging quickly…so jump in an be a part of it. Here’s the next topic…

How do you know that you know?

It’s a good question and one that I now return to regularly when training facilitators. How do we know when something is true, real, correct?

AND, does it even matter when teachers, trainers, instructors just have to ‘get through the curriculum’?

I remember being excited about a particular geography course in the fourth year of my undergrad degree. The prof told us all the fascinating things we would be studying and exploring and my excitement mounted. And then he told us that we would be marked by a test of cognitive knowledge…the things we had to memorize. I couldn’t believe it! In fourth year university we were being tested at the basic recall level of learning that Benjamin Bloom set out in his Taxonomy of Learning[i]. Some questions would take us to comprehension, the second level, but that was it!

In that moment I realize something significant about how I learn, about how I know that I know something. I realized that I know that I know something when I feel it in my body. That’s right. I FEEL it in my body. It can feel warm. It can feel ‘correct’ or aligned with something higher in myself. It can feel like sweet caramel all warm and gooey. So how could I ever get a good mark in this course based on warm caramel?!

I knew in that instant that I was doomed to fail the course. I may even have withdrawn from it, I can’t remember. I felt completely alone in my passion for the topic and my inability to be able to translate that passion and knowing into a decent mark from my educational institution. I knew that I knew that the school system was not serving me. I was profoundly sad…and very very angry. I felt that a significant Truth had been denied. I felt betrayed that the authority demanded by the professor and the institution of higher education he represented. These were the early stirrings of a my personal commitment to restoring honour and dignity to learning.

Have you had a similar experience? How do you know that you know?

So what makes broccoli so palatable to a vibrational facilitator anyway?

This post is an excerpt from my emerging book on Vibrational Facilitation: an emerging conversation. Alright, I know everything is emerging …that’s the point! The thoughts are forming, the grammar’s not the best, but this quickly emerging field of vibrational facilitation is…well emerging quickly…so jump in an be a part of it. Let’s get started…

I’m laughing at how broccoli has woven its way through my work. As a child, I never really cared for broccoli. I like it, it’s alright now, but I’m really not talking about the par-cooked, bright green vegetable that arrives on my plate beside my steak. It looks fine. I know it’s very good for me and I eat the broccoli. But that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about broccoli, the fractal.

Years ago, I was bashing my way through a Masters degree that was all about resistance (no wonder I was bashing!) and change and duality and existentialism. One day I was walking through the university library and a book quite literally dropped off the shelf, a book entitled Leadership and New Science by Margaret Wheatley[i]. I opened it, and there inside was a picture of broccoli.

Broccoli, so Meg said, is a fractal. It’s actually a repeating mathematical equation that creates stunningly beautiful art and things like broccoli and cauliflower. As I looked more closely, I saw a whole head of broccoli and a spear of broccoli, and a tiny piece of broccoli called a fleuret and that were the same. They look the same. They are all made up of the same matter. The only difference is scale.

I was transfixed with this idea of the fractal and how it plays out in the matter not just as the pure theoretical mathematical equation it is.

I enthusiastically brought heads of broccoli into every class. The compliant vegetables began stinking as they heated up through the day in the middle of classroom floors and on tables and teaching areas on podiums or wherever I was teaching. Often I wouldn’t talk about them. I would just allow them to be there, the object of curiosity for students thirsty to learn. Hungry is probably the better word.

In my classes, I used the broccoli as a metaphor for teaching and learning. That which we do in the small, in the tiny, in the micro, is then reflected in the macro, for we are all the same.

One of my earliest websites had broccoli on it and my students would liked it. They felt they were in on a secret handshake. They knew they knew something important. They were part of the broccoli club.

After a while I stopped bringing in the broccoli. Now years later, I have a different website with dandelion seeds and flower petals. The broccoli is gone.

As I was articulating my new work as a vibrational facilitator on a poster, a student asked why there was no broccoli. She was bereft! Her point of connection and inclusion was no longer visible. In that instant, I knew that broccoli had to come back!

So, on to the new poster went the broccoli. On to the brochure went the broccoli. As I went to a conference, there was quite a buzz about the vibrational facilitation work that I was doing. People came up to me and they looked and they saw the broccoli and said, “you’ve got the broccoli! I remember the broccoli! I’m so happy to see the broccoli!”

It’s like they fell back into some secret knowledge, some secret handshake. They had the password, they had the key. They were back in the club. They belonged to something secret, unseen, unknown.

Your thoughts? questions/ Experiences? Curiosities?

Yup, the broccoli stays!

Celebrity or non-celebrity...now THAT's the question!

I must say, I’m pretty surprised at the title of the first chapter. Something arose in class today that jolted this entire process into action. In response, the first conversation with myself is about celebrity, what it does in the classroom (or anywhere else the dynamic shows up), and how to manage/utilize it for the greater good.

In all of my classes, I constantly seek feedback. Participants write it on cards, it’s anonymous, and they tell me something specifically that I did well that day that helped them to learn. Then they tell me something very specifically that I could do for them the next day that would make it even better for them, to make it even better. It is their learning after all and I am simply the facilitator of their learning so I need to know what’s going on.

On a feedback card, a student wrote about the apparent ‘clique’ of students who have worked with me in the past, and how some of the newcomers were actually feeling excluded or separate from this group. As I read this piece of feedback out to the class the next morning, there was an immediate stirring of conversation. Several of the veteran students who have worked with me before, jumped in (I could call it defensively…) to explain further what they really meant about this clique – this ‘Cult of Leslie’ they called it. I moved from ‘caution’ to ‘alert’ when I heard this wording.

Several people said, ‘Yeah, it is. It’s like a Leslie Clique. It’s a Leslie Cult’ and it’s like they have inside knowledge, they’ve been through an initiation of ‘extreme andragogy’ or things vibrational. They were feeling very much like they were on the inside of something. They were very enthusiastic and very excited that others were about to go through this process, which I could see as a ‘good thing’. Yet, in their enthusiasm, they were setting up a very different dynamic in the class. One that excluded the others, that frustrated the others, made them feel ‘lesser than’ because they knew that there was something they needed to ‘get’ but they had no idea what it was or how to get it!

This place of having my own ‘cult’ it would seem then provided me with a very interesting energetic positioning. The ego part of self, that misplaced, incorrect place, energetically speaking, was like, “Wow, I’ve got a cult! How cool is that?” Every other part of me was on high alert and concern about the incorrectness of this position. There is no power there. This is NOT a place from which to model the subtle nuances of facilitating adult learning. We’ve had far too much of that in our school systems.

We’re used to being followers and fans in this culture of ours where every movie star has their fan club. On Facebook, ‘I’m a fan of that’ or ‘I’m not a fan of that’ is the kind of languaging that we get on this world of texting and instant messaging.

And so I charged the class with walking their own talk rather than following me. By all means, keep observing and learning from me and from each other, but when they put themselves in the position of being the ‘follower,’ that’s all they are.

Your thoughts? Experiences?

This book is called Vibrational Facilitation: an emerging conversation. It’s the only title that makes sense.

Well, this book is called Vibrational Facilitation: an emerging conversation. It’s the only title that makes sense.

The content of this book has been brewing in me for ten years or so and then downloaded through me in a catalytic pressure cooker created during a five day intensive summer delivery of Facilitating Adult Learning at the University of Victoria in the summer of 2009. Thoughts, feelings, ideas, concepts kept pressing on me to be written even as I was waking or making breakfast in preparation for the day’s class. I reached for a tape recorder and began talking and basically this is what came out. The intensity of the downloads increased in step with the intensity of classroom discussions.

The purpose of this book is to record the beginning of a movement I feel is happening to reform teaching and learning as we know it. Increasing vibrational frequencies plays an important role in the raising of consciousness as the shift happens. Einstein said we can’t solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it. We can shift consciousness by increasing vibrational frequencies. It’s a highly effective and sustainable option…if only we dare to go there.

And so, the languaging of this book is conversational. It has not been edited for grammar or punctuation. There is no APA referencing…yet. That will come later as the conversation deepens and its form makes itself known…or not! This book is simply a raw recording of a conversation about vibrational facilitation…as it emerges. There is a refreshing clarity in just that. Video clips are being made to continue the conversation online. An Association of Vibrational Professionals is forming. A PhD is becoming and will place this work firmly in the Academy for reference. A movie is beginning with audio and video clips and early conversations with movie makers and funders.

The call is out. Many people are being drawn into this conversation with their own ideas and perceptions and questions. Now is the time. We are the people. Welcome in!
